The Hungry Caterpillar Cake

Did you know, this iconic children’s story was first published in 1969. Written by Eric Carle, this famous story has been the favourite of many kids I know. The tale of a greedy caterpillar who eats more than his weight in food … sleeps and wakes up into a beautiful butterfly. My daughter in particular loved this book as a child. I bought her the pop up version and she wore it out. A regular in our bedtime story routine.

So, with fond memories in mind … I had the pleasure of making this Hungry Caterpillar Cake for an adorable little boy who turns 2.

I really enjoyed making this cake. Simple, with clean lines and bold colours. I ensured that I showcased the main features of the book … the foods: watermelon, cheese, ice cream and an apple and pear. Then the caterpiller itself … sitting safely at the top of the cake basking in the sun.

The cake itself is a super yummy banana cake with a light layer of Swiss meringue buttercream. Encased in a decadent layer of chocolate ganache with the fondant icing decorations to finish.

Hope the little birthday boy loves the cake … I sure do.

Until next week …
